Birthdays




Sunday will be my 69th birthday.

As custom dictates, birthdays are celebrated with birthday cakes. I know that my family loves me very much because they ordered, not one but, three birthday cakes: a Dobos Torte, a Walnut Torte and a Raspberry Whipped Cream Torte. With a lot of help, I am making all three.

My family will add the candles.

Novodevichy Cemetery

Yuri Nikulin a famous clown and actor  No, I am not gloomy, nor am I looking forward to dying  - I just enjoy visiting and walking in cemeteries. Most are in a beautiful park like setting, the plots are well maintained and many tombstones tell some story and then my imagination can fill the rest. There are always the names and the year of their birth and death. Then there is all the additional information like who remembers them,  the children they had, sometimes the work they did and often there is an engraving of a quote. Some memorials are sculptures of the person who died and others are more modest, but still very touching. My first time visiting a cemetery, other than as a child escorting family members to their resting place,  was when I was an Au-pair student in Paris from 1963-1965. Mid Carolina Run Shop Hop 2012

As I was visiting my family in North Carolina I came across an ad for this shop hop. Although, my Daughter-in-Law is not a quilter, I mentioned this shop hop to her and we got really enthused about the adventure. What is a "shop-hop"?  It is visiting participating quilt shops and collecting a free fabric piece or pattern samples from each shop. Once all the patterns are collected a quilt can be made. In these shops in addition to the patterns they gave away regional recipes as well. There were only seven shops in this group, but it took us a whole day to visit each and every one of them. We had a wonderful time together and it was a beautiful day to travel.   Here are the  quilts made from the blocks given away by the stores. Each store choose their own fabrics and added their creativity while assembling the quilts.
